Plains is a town in Sanders County with approximately 1,500 residents. It was originally called Horse Plains because Indians in the area would winter their horses on the natural grasses in the valley.  When the postal service was established in 1905, the name was shortened to just Plains.

The first permanent white settlers arrived around 1867. The railroad reached Plains in the early 1880's. By the early 1900's, a stone jail was built.  Plains has since grown into a small modern community and a great place to spend your day.
